Will / Going to

index

Both auxiliary verbs are used to speak about the future but:

WILL followed by infinitive without 'to' is used to express:

prediction:  He will feel better after the operation.

decisions made at the time you are speaking: You and your family are in the sitting room. The phone starts ringing and you say: "I´ll answer it."

volition (What you want to do in the future): I will take you to the airport.

GOING TO is used to express:

the subject's intention to do something in the future: I am going to buy Jenny a diamond ring for her birthday.

the speaker's certainty about an action in the future because he can see signs in the present of what is going to happen in the future:

These trees are going to lose their leaves very soon.

The leaves are yellow. The colour of the leaves is the sign.

With verbs of movement (go, leave, come...), it is more common to use the present continuous:

Peter is coming with us.
When are you leaving? Tomorrow morning.
